Pakistan and Russia Deepen Agricultural Trade Ties, Resolve Citrus Dispute
In a key diplomatic development, Pakistan and Russia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral agricultural trade while addressing long-standing barriers. The talks took place during a high-level meeting between Federal Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain and the Ambassador of the Russian Federation, focusing on export challenges in the citrus and potato sectors.
Citrus Export Restrictions Withdrawn
The minister raised concerns over recent disruptions in Pakistan’s citrus exports to Russia due to claims of the Mediterranean Fruit Fly. He explained that Pakistan’s Department of Plant Protection (DPP) had conducted a detailed technical investigation in response to objections raised by Russia’s Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (FSVPS).
Key Findings Presented by Pakistan:
-
No evidence of Mediterranean Fruit Fly based on seasonal pest surveys and lab tests
-
Scientific literature supported DPP’s findings
-
Comprehensive technical exchange between DPP and FSVPS
As a result, the FSVPS officially withdrew its objection to citrus imports, paving the way for resumption of citrus trade between the two countries.
Potato Export Issues Under Review
Minister Hussain also expressed concerns regarding the pending clearance of Pakistani potato consignments, which faced regulatory delays. In response, the Russian ambassador assured:
“I will immediately engage relevant Russian authorities to expedite clearance of potato shipments and ensure smooth trade flow.”
Strengthening Bilateral Agri-Trade
Both parties stressed the need to eliminate trade barriers and enhance cooperation in plant health, inspection protocols, and phytosanitary standards to improve bilateral trade efficiency.
Minister Hussain emphasized the mutual economic benefits of uninterrupted trade and highlighted the importance of open channels for future issues, particularly in the fresh produce sector.
Final Thoughts
Pakistan’s successful engagement with Russia over citrus trade concerns is a positive sign for exporters and a boost for bilateral agricultural trade. As efforts continue to resolve the potato export issue, the diplomatic dialogue reflects growing trust and economic alignment between Islamabad and Moscow in the agri-sector.
