Archer’s comeback has been carefully monitored by England’s cricket leadership, particularly Managing Director Rob Key, after he endured recurring elbow and back injuries that kept him out of red-ball cricket since 2021.
His return marks the first time he’s played under the Brendon McCullum–Ben Stokes regime, known for its fearless and Bazball-inspired brand of cricket.
“The guys have played some really exciting cricket since Baz took over,” Archer noted.
“The mentality under Baz suits the way I like to play my cricket.”

With the fourth Test against India set to begin on July 23 in Manchester, Archer is raring to go and hopes to play a key role in both the remainder of the series and England’s long-term plans for the Ashes tour to Australia in November.

“It would have been the format which would have taken the most time to come back to,” said Archer.
“So I played 50-over and T20 for the last year and a half, two years. But I couldn’t wait to get back into Tests.”
England’s medical and coaching staff will continue to assess his fitness before deciding on his workload, but Archer’s enthusiasm and form are major positives for the team.
