Heavy Monsoon Rains Lash Punjab, Trigger Power Outages and Urban Flooding

A fresh monsoon spell has gripped Punjab, bringing intermittent heavy downpours across numerous cities and triggering widespread power disruptions and urban flooding, according to Aaj News and official sources.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasts that the rain system will persist till July 17, with more rainfall expected in the next 24 hours across the province.

Cities including:

  • Lahore

  • Sadiqabad

  • Kot Addu

  • Kamalia

  • Rajanpur

  • Khanpur

  • Sahiwal

witnessed torrential rains, resulting in waterlogging in low-lying areas, tripping of power feeders, and interrupted electricity supply.

The PMD has warned of potential flash floods in local streams and rivers, and heightened risk of urban flooding in vulnerable areas. Water levels are rising in River Chenab and Tarbela Dam, prompting alerts to district administrations for immediate precautions.

In Taunsa Sharif, surging water in the Indus River submerged bridges, cutting off access routes. Residents expressed frustration over the lack of flood relief camps, stating that they were forced to endure harsh conditions without shelter.

In light of the escalating situation:

  • The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has instructed all relevant agencies to ensure preemptive safety measures.

  • The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has directed deputy commissioners across Punjab to stay on high alert.

  • Rescue teams, WASA personnel, and emergency machinery have been mobilized.

  • A 24/7 control room is now operational for real-time monitoring and response coordination.
