In a landmark move to tackle chronic load-shedding and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has launched a Rs20 billion solar project, placing the province at the forefront of renewable energy transformation in Pakistan.
The initiative, inaugurated by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, is being rolled out in phases. In the first phase, 32,500 households have been selected through a transparent electronic balloting system to receive free solar systems, including panels, batteries, ceiling fans, and LED lights.
The overwhelming response—2.5 million applications received online—demonstrates the public’s growing demand for affordable, clean, and consistent energy solutions.
Project Scope and Benefits
This ambitious initiative aims to solarize a total of 130,000 households, including 30,000 homes in merged districts. Half of the beneficiaries will receive the systems at no cost, while the remaining recipients will access subsidized packages through easy installment plans.
Special consideration has been given to vulnerable groups, including widows, transgender individuals, and low-income families, ensuring that those most affected by Pakistan’s energy crisis receive priority.
The selection process has been declared free from political influence, with oversight mechanisms introduced to maintain transparency, installation quality, and long-term system maintenance.
