Ford Motor Company is recalling over 850,000 vehicles in the United States due to a fuel pump defect that poses a potential fire hazard, according to a report issued by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Wednesday.

The safety recall covers approximately 694,271 units, specifically:

  • 2021–2024 Ford Bronco Sport

  • 2020–2022 Ford Escape

The NHTSA stated that a cracked fuel injector in these vehicles could leak fuel into the engine compartment, significantly increasing the risk of an engine fire.

“A cracked fuel injector may result in fuel accumulation near ignition sources, posing a serious fire hazard,” the agency noted.

Scope of the Issue

While 694,271 vehicles are officially affected, media reports indicate that over 850,000 units might be involved when combining earlier recall rounds and regional adjustments. Ford has not issued an official stop-sale, but owners are urged to check with dealerships immediately.

Next Steps for Owners

Ford has committed to addressing the issue at no cost to the customer. Affected vehicle owners will be notified and can schedule appointments with authorized dealers for:

  • Inspection of the fuel system

  • Replacement of cracked fuel injectors

  • Software updates to detect fuel pressure drops

Owners can check their vehicle’s recall status using their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the official Ford or NHTSA websites.

Ford’s Statement

Ford emphasized that it is working closely with safety regulators and has not received reports of injuries related to the defect as of now. However, the company is taking proactive measures to ensure customer safety and prevent future incidents.
